Specialist medical support for complex pregnancies
While most pregnancies don’t require additional medical care, some benefit from specialist input. In these cases, Dr Christine Sammartino provides expert support alongside Dr Rane.
Dr Sammartino is a nephrologist, general physician and obstetric medicine specialist with extensive experience in managing complex pregnancies. She completed an Obstetric Medicine Fellowship at Mater Health in Brisbane and is accredited by the Society of Obstetric Medicine of Australia & New Zealand.
She also holds a public appointment in nephrology at Western Health and consults from Melbourne Kidneys, located within our North Melbourne rooms.
Dr Sammartino leads a multidisciplinary team of physicians, working out of Melbourne Mothers, and collaborates closely with Dr Rane to manage conditions such as hypertension, kidney disease, diabetes, clotting disorders, thyroid concerns, and other complex issues such as endocrine and gastrointestinal disorders. Care is always delivered with clear communication and a calm, collaborative approach.

Frequently Asked Questions
There’s a lot to think about when you’re choosing an obstetrician. Here are some of the questions we’re asked most often.
Do I need a referral to make a booking?
No, you don’t need a referral to make an enquiry or book your first appointment. If you have one, we’ll take it into account and you’ll likely be eligible for a Medicare rebate, but it’s not essential.
Can I choose a caesarean birth?
Yes. Dr Rane believes birth choice should be respected. If you're considering a planned caesarean, he’ll talk you through the process and help you make an informed decision that feels right for you.
Does Dr Rane support VBAC?
Absolutely. VBAC (vaginal birth after caesarean) is one of Dr Rane’s key areas of focus. He’ll explain your options clearly and work with you to create a plan you’re confident in.
Can I choose which hospital I give birth in?
Yes. You can choose to give birth at Frances Perry House, St Vincent’s Private, or Epworth Freemasons. These are the three private hospitals where Dr Rane is accredited to deliver. If you’re not sure which is the best fit, get in touch, we're happy to talk you through the options.
What if I’ve had a traumatic birth in the past?
Many of Dr Rane’s patients come to him after a previous difficult experience. He takes the time to listen, and to shape a new plan with you that feels safe, respectful and steady.
